About the HEYTEA Oolong Cold Brew

The HEYTEA Oolong Cold Brew is $6.50 and 5 calories. Zhangping oolong tea, cold brewed, with nothing else in the cup.

Zhangping is a place rather than a style. The oolong from that county in Fujian is pressed into small square cakes instead of being left loose, which is unusual for oolong and is the reason it is named on the menu at all. The leaf is folded into paper squares and pressed flat, so it opens slowly and evenly in water.

Cold brewing changes what you get out of it. Hot water pulls tannin and caffeine quickly and aroma alongside them. Cold water pulls the aromatics and leaves most of the tannin behind, so a cold brew of the same leaf tastes sweeter and rounder without a gram of sugar going in.

That is what makes the calorie count possible. At 5 calories, 1g of carbohydrate and no sugar at all, this is the lightest drink on the menu after the Gardenia 1, and the two are the only cups on the board that carry nothing.

Price is where it earns its place. At $6.50 it undercuts every other Tea Lab drink by a wide margin, because there is no milk, no cloud and no topping in it. What you are paying for is the leaf and the twelve hours it spent in cold water.

It is also the honest way to judge a HEYTEA shop. A cold brew has no dairy to hide behind, so a cup that tastes thin means the leaf was under-dosed and a cup that tastes sharp means it was brewed warm to save time.

Sweetness levels apply here as they do everywhere else on the menu, and taking any sugar at all defeats the point. The drink is built to taste sweet without it.

Order it as a second drink alongside something heavy. After a brown sugar bobo, a cold brew resets the palate in a way that water does not.

For the same leaf with milk, the Oolong Milk Brew is $10.50. For the full Tea Lab treatment on oolong, the Oolong 3.6 is $11.90.

Tips

  • Filtered water matters more here than in hot brewing, since nothing masks the taste of the tap.
  • Rolled or pressed leaf works better than broken leaf, which over-extracts even in cold water.
  • Give it a gentle stir at the four hour mark so the leaf that floated gets wet.

Variations

  • Add cold milk after straining and you have the Oolong Milk Brew.
  • Cold brew a scented green tea the same way for a lighter, more floral version.
  • Add a strip of orange peel to the jug for the last two hours.

A palate reset. It works better after a rich drink than water does, and it carries almost nothing.

Oolong Cold Brew Questions

What is Zhangping oolong?
An oolong from Zhangping county in Fujian that is pressed into small square cakes rather than left loose. The pressed leaf opens slowly and evenly, which suits cold brewing.
How many calories are in Oolong Cold Brew?
5 calories with 1g of carbohydrate and no sugar. Only the Gardenia 1 is lighter.
Why does cold brew taste sweeter than hot tea?
Cold water pulls the aromatics and leaves most of the tannin behind. Less tannin reads as more sweetness, even though no sugar goes in.
Why is it so much cheaper than the other Tea Lab drinks?
There is no milk, cloud or topping in it. At $6.50 you are paying for the leaf and the twelve hours it spent in cold water.
Should I add sugar to it?
No. Sweetness levels are available as they are on every drink, but the cold brew method exists to produce sweetness without sugar, and adding any works against it.
